Matthew
James "drumachine" Leclair began playing 6 years ago when his first kit
was bought for him as a christmas present. From there he's moved on to
play in 5 different bands before neverwas. ranging from Jazz to
Heavy Metal and has performed at numerous bars and clubs around Brantford.
In addition to neverwas., Matt freelances and teaches drums/percussion
privately. In an effort to improve his own playing abilities, Matt attends
numerous clinics taught by both local drum gurus and professionals including
Craig Hunter of the Philosopher Kings and session master Kenny Arnoff.
Matt's
style of kit drumming holds roots from nearly every possible musical style
but is most strongly based around groups such as Tool, Buddy Rich Big
Band, Pearl Jam, Santana, Primus, The Doors, Led Zepplin, Edgar Winter
Group and Korn. His playing is a form not often seen in modern day pop/rock
as it utilizes complex rhythms and patterns allowing Matt to flex his
creative muscle while still adding to the solid bass lines to give neverwas.
a powerful backbone.
Along
with kit, Matthew is well versed in nearly every percussion instrument from
Bongos to Xylophone. He has also, in the past, learned to play guitar and
bass giving him a better understanding of his bandmates' ideas during the
writing process as complex as they may become in some scenarios. In Matt's
opinion, nothing can compare to getting behind a kit and jamming out a solid
groove (this being how most of his time is spent).
Matthew
plays a green 6-piece Pearl kit. Mounted on a full Dixon/Gibraltar drum
cage with his Yamaha 10" stage snare and unique cymbal setup (Sabian AAX
and Camber 20" rides, Sabian AAX and Headliner 5000G 14" crashes, 10"
Solar splash, 16" Solar Chinese and Sabian Tri-Hats). All of this along
side a set of black/purple off tint bongos which can be heard predominantly
in "Bright".
